Textile View - Issue 88 (Winter 2009)

The latest issue of Textile view is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

Contents:
  • Publishers view - The last round of designer shows may end up being most memorable not for the clothes but as pointers to the future of the whole fashion system. Fashion, it can now be stated, has become entertainment.
  • Fibres & fabrics - While for so long fabrics have been getting lighter and lighter, this tendency now seems to be reversing as fabrics become more compact, firmer and even heavier.
  • Capital update - Plenty of retail activity and also shop openings in spite of the crisis, but it is hard to get a clear picture on consumer spending. The public is still in a mood for thrift, but, hopefully, they are just holding back before a Christmas splurge.
  • Fashion news - What's gone wrong in Japan? View investigates; Is Twitter the future of fashion marketing?; Liz Claiborne's big surprise in JC Penney link-up; The New Normal, post-recession blues; The Green Revolution, it's here to stay; Meditations on Fashion, how the Anna Wintour movie summed up an era.
  • Womenswear r-t-w shows - A sense of optimism emerged from the womens r-t-w shows whether through colour and fabric or the new softened silhouettes.
  • Express fashion - The catwalks brought a new sense of adventure, with some experimental and dramatic directions set to breath new energy into our customers... and about time too!
  • Designer fabric messages - Despite careful consumer market, the catwalk is far from playing it safe. On the contrary, it's proving to be a dreamy and somewhat otherworldly season rather than one firmly planted in stark reality.
  • Designer details - Work-a-day, military and masculine biker aspects are contrasted sharply by an intensely feminine look seeing a return to the earliest forms of body adornment through wrapping and draping.
  • New fabric directions - The most difficult tast this season, apart from choosing what look you want to follow, is deciding you palette - investment camels and greys, interesting new winter blues or the brightest of anti-recession brights.
  • Menswear orientations - Elemental. In troubled times we need trusted friends. We choose to rely on sure values and want to establish relationship based on trust and reliability.
  • Womenswear forecast - Garments will no longer be perceived as single, unique pieces but as elements incorporated into a total silhouette, that has been carefully styled with lots of layering.
  • Menswear forecast - Fabrics weight nothing, caress the body or dress it with supple structures. And we transfer this lightness of material into a lightness of being and thinking that floats across the season.
  • Knit colours - Colour flows from ethereal 'barely there' tones through washed and fresh naturals to a powerful intensity of darks and dynamic brights for summer sparkle.
  • Knits & yarns - Looking at knits through fresh eyes, the seasonal message is focused on those exceptional developments, which enhance the honest down-to-earth product offer to which we are drawn.
  • Menswear knits - Our trend message for Summer 2011 knits heads into two key directions - 'A Touch of Ethnic' or 'Fresh, Clean and Modern'.
  • Knitwear forecast - Just when you thought you'd seen it all, knitwear for winter brings together a magnificent and breathtaking combination of techniques, textures and forms.
  • Lifestyle - 'Happiness' - The American Declaration of Independence says that all men are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but not the happiness itself. So what exactly is happiness, and what does it mean to us today?
  • Design & lifestyle - Get real and escape! Fashion and design bounce between the urge to get real and stay focused and the need for novelty and excitement.
  • Lifestyle dressing - We're supposed to be giving a damn again. But are we really dressing up again? To find out, we used last September's Première Vision as a barometer and it reads in a very interesting way.

Poster Collection

Poster collection : photo graphics edited by Bettina Richter, essay by Nanni Baltzer is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"The focus is on eight graphic artists chosen to exemplify today consciously, using photography and type as their means of expression. In the posters of Michal Batory, Cyan, Werner Jeker, M/M (Paris), Gerwin Schmidt, Skolos/Wedell, Leonardo Sonnoli, and Tschumi, Küng, it becomes clear that different visual conceptions can have different consequences for the use of photography, and can conceal different attitudes towards graphic design" -- Bettina Richter (back cover)
