An Introduction to Visual Culture

An introduction to visual culture by Nicholas Mirzoeff (2nd edition) is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

An Introduction to Visual Culture provides a wide-ranging introduction to the now established interdisciplinary field of visual culture.

Mapping a global history and theory of visual culture, An Introduction to Visual Culture asks how and why visual media have become so central to everyday life.

Improved text design and colour images throughout make it an even more valuable teaching tool. Brand new features in the second edition include Key Image studies from Holbein's The Ambassadors, to Blade Runner and the Abu Ghraib atrocities; and a Key Words section in each chapter, discussing vital critical terms and the debates that surround them.

In this innovative, thoroughly revised and extended edition, Nicholas Nirzoeff explores:
  • an extensive range of visual forms from painting, sculpture, and photography to television, cinema, and the Internet;
  • the centrality of "race" and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and the body in shaping visual culture;
  • the importance of images of natural disaster and conflict, such as Hurricane Katrina and the war in Iraq.

Craft ACT Exhibition

Opening 6.pm Thursday 24 June followed at 7.pm with an artist talk by Ian Factor

You and your guests are invited to join Craft ACT at the official opening of the exhibitions by guest speaker

Grace Cochrane independent writer and curator

Abstract
Ian Factor
Craft ACT Gallerie
Discover contemporary furniture which explores a new consciousness in furniture design. Factor’s distinctive works establish a creative fusion between abstract design and functional furniture using sustainable timbers. The exhibition will examine the effect of placing contemporary furniture in a gallery context showcasing the union of functionality with abstract and sculptural forms.

Substrate, Structure, Surface
Leonie Andrews
Craft ACT Gallerie
The compulsion to order, to create physical and visual harmony is at the core of Andrews’ work. Recycled textiles are joined through layering and stitching, united by dyes, printed and stitched marks. The holes, wear and tear and stains become key elements adding vitality to these textile works.

Mind Refined
Jane Crick
Craft ACT Crucible Showcase
Craft ACT partners with the Canberra Potters’ Society, to award an exhibition selected from the Society’s annual members exhibition. Jane Crick is the recipient of the 2009 award. Crick plays with form and texture, creating ceramic objects she describes as ‘messed up geometry’. The works are inspired by agricultural and industrial buildings, and represent a progression of Crick's practice to new angular, rustic forms.

The exhibitions continue until Saturday 31 July
Level 1, North Building, 180 London Circuit, Civic ACT

Drop and Plop: public debate

Craft ACT Galleries
Tuesday 8 June 6.pm–7.pm

Craft ACT and Canberra Contemporary Art Space presents the Fora Series. This series of informal discussions and debates examine topical issues surrounding the impact and influence of contemporary craft and design on the cityscape and city dwellers, and form part of the ongoing dialogue associated with the Designing a Capital: Crafting a City program.

Drop and plop: the art of public sculpture explores the validity of public art and its civic function for the people of Canberra. Come and hear the experts and the most opinionated as they debate the question, 'Is public art the least democratic of art forms?'.

Join host David Broker, Director Canberra Contemporary Art Space and prepare yourself for a night of light hearted humour, opinion and good old fashion hot-headed competitiveness.

Speaking for the assenting team arguing 'Public art is the most democratic of art forms' we have Senator Kate Lundy, Kate Murphy and Michael Desmond, and on the dissenting team arguing 'Public art is the least democratic of art forms' we will hear from Domenic Mico, Karina Harris and Natalie Thomas.

For more information on our speakers visit the Designing a Capital: Crafting a City program on our website.

Gudgenby traces continues until Saturday 12 June
