Site planning and design handbook (2nd edition) by Thomas H. Russ is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

Architectural Drafting for Interior Designers

Architectural drafting for interior designers by Lydia Sloan Cline is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

History of Interior Design & Furniture

History of interior design & furniture: from ancient Egypt to nineteenth-century Europe (2nd edition) by Robbie G. Blakemore is a new book that is now available for loan in the Learning Centre.

"History of Interior Design and Furniture, Second Edition presents a comprehensive survey of the major historical periods of interior architecture and decorative styles.  Now full color throughout, this monumental overview is a breathtaking journey through five millennia of interior space, architectural details, and furniture.

The updated Second Edition masterfully distinguishes between such styles as Queen Anne, Rococo, and Elizabethan, while emphasizing the critical aesthetic elements of the societies that produced these recognizable styles.  Starting in ancient Egypt, this authoritative survey chronicles the ever-changing panorama of Greek, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and nineteenth-century design.  From wall paintings in Pompeii to the luxurious parlours of Victorian England, special attention is paid to the relationships between interior architecture and the objects that define its spaces.

This impressive work offers more than just a history of style - it examines furniture and design from the broader social, political, economic, and technological perspectives exclusive to each historical continuum, this insightful book traces the thread of cultural influence across centuries, from the ancient Roman's retrospective look at their Greek forerunners to the revival styles that characterize the Victorian age.  Thoroughly researched and clearly presented, this book integrates enlightening facts against a backdrop of the evolution of space and the interior aesthetic over time.

More than 450 elegant photographs and over 175 new illustrations - many covering furniture types such as beds and storage - support the authoritative text inside.  Stunning three-dimensional plans convey the spatial relationships that are essential to understanding the history of interior architecture, and a historical timeline chronicles the important events that shaped interior design.  Explicit, cogent captions not only identify each figure but also provide insightful commentary that supplements the primary text.  This edition is also complete with a new comprehensive glossary of terms as well as a companion Web site.

History of Interior Design and Furniture, Second Edition is a unique and welcome addition to the canon of interior design literature.  Stimulating to the practitioner as well as the layman, this grand Second Edition is required reading for the serious student and educator of architecture and design alike." -- dust jacket

Managing the Design Process

Managing the design process, concept development: an essential manual for the working designer by Terry Lee Stone is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"Managing the Design Process - Concept Development is an essential primer for all graphic designers.  As students, designers learn to develop and hone their creative skills, but courses on managing their careers and business are almost nonexistent.  Everything from creating a design brief to what questions to ask in a client meeting, are the cornerstones of a successful design career.  Learning how to communicate and effectively strategize with clients to envision the best possible outcome for each project is essential for every designer.

This book explains how to do these things and more.  It focuses on the concept development process, the early stages of the designer-client relationship, before the design hits the pavement, so to speak.  Research, goal setting, design strategy, creative risk taking, and effectively managing client expectations are all addressed.

Businesses and organizations of all types are starting to understand that good design can give a product a distinct competitive advantage over other products in the same category - inevitably benefiting their company's bottom line.  What is not clear to many is the intricate collaborative partnership between designer and client that is required to not only achieve a great design, but also to utilize it to its full capacity through a series of strategic steps.  Managing the Design Process - Concept Development is precisely about that collaboration." -- back cover

Introduction to Ergonomics

Introduction to ergonomics (3rd edition) by R. S. Bridger is a new book that is now available for loan in the Learning Centre.

"The past decade has seen the development and testing of an increasingly large set of ergonomics tools.  With new sections in every chapter, the third edition of Introduction to Ergonomics describes a representative selection of tools and demonstrates how to apply them in practice.  In fully researched, stand alone sections with worked examples, the book provides useful, practical skills for dealing with real-world ergonomic problems.  The author's approach is based on a professional model in which specialized skills are backed-up by a good general knowledge of ergonomics.  This approach is in accordance with International Ergonomics Association guidelines.

See what's new in the Third Edition
  • Ergonomics Workshop sections in each chapter with worked examples and advice for using problem solving tools
  • Guidance for the design of questionnaires, rating scales, and the conduct of surveys applicable across all areas of ergonomics
  • Task analysis examples together with a wide variety of ergonomics checklists and design guidelines
  • Increased coverage of the role of stress and psychological well-being on the health of workers and on systems safety
  • New material for course lectures, examinations, and projects - over 200 essays and exercises
  • Glossary of technical terms
  • New evidence for the cost-effectiveness of ergonomics in practice
  • Advice for further study
  • Updated Instructor's Manual
The book's built-in flexibility allows it to be used in a variety of ways.  Reading the main text supplies a general overview of ergonomics in action.  Delving deeper, the Ergonomics Workshop sections include tutorials and exercises that provide a basic toolkit for carrying out risk assessments and for solving real-world problems.  This multi-level organization allows those studying human factors, psychology, industrial engineering, and occupational ergonomics to get both general knowledge and specialized information.  The self-contained chapters are also accessible to non-ergonomics professionals who need to know more about the subject." -- back cover

Flooring

Flooring: the essential source book for planning, selecting, and restoring floors by Elizabeth Wilhide is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"We make more demands on the floor than we do on any other structural element of the home.  It must not only be strong and durable, but also comfortable, safe, and good-looking.  And since your choice in flooring can often require a substantial investment, getting it right is essential.  Elizabeth Wilhide's Flooring is a rich fund of inspiration and sound advice for all the floors in your home, whether it is modern or period, urban or rural, sumptuous or simple.

Flooring celebrates the fabulous range of colors, textures, and finishes widely available today.  Elizabeth Wilhide shows how to select and use the most appropriate floor covering - be it striking and cool, or warm and welcoming - as the basis for truly stunning interiors to suit every budget and way of life.  Overriding design issues including scale and proportion, architectural character, flooring combinations, and detail, are tackled with ingenuity, practicality, and style.

Individual chapters cover the main flooring materials: hard (brick, stone, marble, tile, glass, concrete, metal); wood (both old and new); sheet and soft tile (rubber, linoleum, vinyl, leather); and soft (textiles of every description).  There is detailed, illustrated advice on the installation, care, maintenance, and restoration of each material, as well as instructions for personalizing a floor using pattern and color, from simple contrasts to sophisticated paint effects.

Few other features can coordinate or define interior spaces as well as a carefully chosen floor.  With its 400 up-to-date color photographs, 100 how-to illustrations, and directory of suppliers, Flooring is the most comprehensive and practical volume devoted to this large and important element of the home." -- back cover

The Soft Furnishings Source Book

The soft furnishings source book by Leslie Geddes-Brown is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"Whether you long for the fresh and muted tones of Swedish minimalism, with sheer white linen hangings at the windows, or plan to upholster your sofa and armchairs in traditional toile de Jouy, The Soft Furnishings Source Book will help you to make your vision a reality.  In this fully revised and updated guide to decorative style, leading interiors writer Leslie Geddes-Brown shares her experience in exploring every aspect of using soft furnishings in the home.

The illuminating first chapter, on Fabric Styles, includes a host of images showing how the various types of fabric - from wools and velvets to suedes to and leathers - create a distinctive look and feel in a room.  The Components considers the different elements of soft furnishings, including curtains, loose covers, cushions and bed treatments, and offers advice about how to find your way through the multitude of choices.  Room By Room shows how these individual elements can be brought together into cohesive decorative schemes.

In Practicalities, Lucinda Ganderton covers basic sewing techniques and gives step-by-step instructions for 12 stylish yet simple projects.  An extensive directory of suppliers puts the finishing touch to this indispensable guide." -- dust jacket

Chema Madoz

Chema Madoz: Obras Maestras (Masterpieces) is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.
"Chema Madoz Born in Spain in 1958, is one of contemporary photography's most personal and innovative artists. His work, influenced by surrealism and visual poetry, composes a complex magic universe where objects are never what they seem, or seem to be what they aren't. Madoz brilliantly plays with the perception of those who view his images and explores beyond reality.
In just one year (2000), his profound, intuitive work received Spain's National Photography Award, the PHotoEspaña Prize and the Higashikawa Prize. The artist, who has always lived in Madrid, has held numerous exhibitions since the mid-nineteen eighties. Outstanding among them are Objetos 1990-1999, the first retrospective that the Reina Sofía Museum dedicated to a live Spanish photographer; Chema Madoz 2000-2005, organised by the Ministry of Culture; and Poética, a travelling show that has received the praise of critics and public alike in countries such as Japan, China and Brazil.
Obras Maestras (Masterpieces) This book, which initiates La Fárica's Obras Maestras Collection, tells the story of Chema Madoz through the reproduction of more than 300 photographs within its 450 pages.
Page by page, three decades of creation are covered and the artist's inner world is revealed. His life and works are discovered thanks to essays by Duane Michals, Oliva María Rubio, Estrella de Diego and Christian Caujolle as well as an extensive and detailed illustrated timeline." -- dust jacket

Designing and Patternmaking for Stretch Fabrics

Designing and patternmaking for stretch fabrics by Keith Richardson is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"Stretch fabrics are more popular than ever, used for Juicy Couture's sweats and in the trendy, ready-to-wear styles found at H&M. But stretch fabrics have long been a staple of designer fashion as well - from Missoni's colorful knits to Donna Karan's basics. Designing and Patternmaking for Stretch Fabrics provides the design student or working designer with the essential information for understanding the specifics of knit fabrics and the patternmaking process for different garments. Fibers, dyes, treatments, and fabric sources are discussed, along with the principles of sizing and measuring for women's, men's, petite, plus, and half sizes. Chapters focusing on particular garments begin with a draft of a sloper block. Numerous illustrations and diagrams demonstrate the effects of draping, gathering, shirring, ruffling, and making adjustments as needed to flatter the wearer. Practice garments will put students' skills and creativity to work - everything they need to turn an ordinary garment into one of original designer quality." -- back cover

Achieving Invisibility

Achieving invisibility: the art of architectural visualization and rendering by Adam Crespi is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"Achieving Invisibility: The Art of Architectural Visualization and Rendering provides working techniques for 3-D modeling with software like Autodesk 3ds Max. Students learn to construct architectural renderings, interior environments, and fly-through animations that appear to be photos rather than computer-generated renderings. The computer, in essence, becomes invisible, and the viewer focuses instead on the design. Each exercise is introduced by a brief explanation of the intended results, when and where in production it would be used, and some typical examples. Step-by-step written instructions with drawings follow. With lessons ranging from beginner to expert, students will be able to construct almost any type of building, interior, texture, or light effect with elegance and efficiency." -- back cover

Spatial Design

Spatial design by Ulrich Exner and Dietrich Pressel is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.
"Architecture does not consist of two-dimensional drawings - it is constructed space. Basics Spatial Design deals with the history behind spatial perception and design, and provides a deep understanding of the conscious and deliberate design of three-dimensional relationships. It introduces possibilities for spatial design clearly and in a way that can be easily incorporated into one's own practice." -- back cover

Encyclopedia of Furnishing Textiles, Floorcoverings and Home Furnishing Practices, 1200-1950

Encyclopedia of furnishing textiles, floorcoverings and home furnishing practices, 1200-1950 by Clive Edwards is a new reference book that is now available for use in the Learning Centre.
"The Encyclopedia of Furnishing Textiles is an accessible and comprehensive reference work describing the furnishing textiles, soft furnishings and floor coverings used in Western domestic interiors over the period 1200-1950.
Included with descriptions and histories are details of the manufacture, distribution and consumption of furnishing goods. The encyclopedia incorporates details of most historic furnishing practices (which have often been dealt with only individually), and benefits from extensive consultation of primary or out-of-print sources to show how the products were viewed historically. The book includes nearly 1200 entries covering generic topics such as woven textiles, printed textiles, embroidered textiles, tapestry, painted cloths, yarns, dyes, carpets, rugs, non-woven fabrics, oil-cloths, wall materials, upholstery materials, loose covers, trimmings (passementeries), beds, cushions and many more. Entries vary according to their role and importance, but usually include a description, historical explanations of use, technical details, and primary and secondary source material." -- dust jacket

Craft, Space and Interior Design, 1855-2005

Craft, space and interior design, 1855-2005 edited by Sandra Alfoldy and Janice Helland is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.
"Constructed space is defined by its shape, by the materials with which it is enclosed and by the objects that are placed within or decorate its exterior or interior. The interaction of these crafted objects or decorated surfaces with space provides viewers or inhabitants with visual clues about the environment as well as visual cues about decorum: viewers can know what kind of behaviour is expected and what the space means. Furnishings and dress, textile panels and clay pots, stained glass and gesso panels, all defined as craft or decorative art, give architectural space, defined as high art, its character: without craft, architecture is empty and devoid of meaning.
This engaging collection of essays presents the first sustained exploration of the relationship of craft to architectural spaces. The book unravels the complex ways in which craft controls, manipulates, organises and defines space, to highlight how the relationship between craft and space can be understood as a form of communication between related parts that combine to form a unified whole." -- back cover

Designing commercial interiors (2nd edition) by Christine M. Piotrowski and Elizabeth A. Rogers is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.
"Following the success of the ASID/Polsky Prize Honorable Mention in 1999, authors Christine Piotrowski and Elizabeth Rogers have extensively revised this guide to planning and designing commercial interiors to help professionals and design students successfully address today's trends and project requirements. This comprehensive reference covers the practical and aesthetic issues that distinguish commercial interiors. There is new information on sustainable design, security, and accessibility - three areas of increased emphasis in modern interiors.
An introductory chapter provides an overview of commercial interior design and the challenges and rewards of working in the field, and stresses the importance of understanding the basic purpose and functions of the client's business as a prerequisite to designing interiors. This guide also gives the reader a head start with eight self-contained chapters that provide comprehensive coverage of interior design for specific types of commercial facilities, ranging from offices to food and beverage facilities, and from retail stores to health care facilities. Each chapter is complete with a historical overview, types of facilities, planning and interior design elements, design applications, a summary, references, and Web sites. New design applications covered include spas in hotels, bed and breakfast inns, coffee shops, gift stores and salons, courthouses and courtrooms, and golf clubhouses.
In keeping with the times, there are new chapters focusing on senior living facilities and on restoration and adaptive use. A chapter on project management has been revised and includes everything from proposals and contracts to scheduling and documentation. Throughout the book, design application discussions, illustrations, and photographs help both professional and students solve problems and envision and implement distinctive designs for commercial interiors.
With information on licensing, codes, and regulations, along with more than 150 photographs and illustrations, this combined resource and instant reference is a must-have for commercial interior design professionals, students, and those studying for the NCIDQ licensing exam." -- back cover

The Berg encyclopedia of world dress and fashion is a new 10 volume reference resource available for use within the Learning Centre.
Volume 10: Global Perspectives
"Global Perspectives provides a transnational overview of dress within the global arena. "Intelligent" textiles and the impact of recent developments in nanotechnology are addressed alongside such popular culture phenomena as "cosplay," based on Japanese comics and animation, and virtual worlds, where avatars provide opportunities for multiple, shifting identities. There are broad overview articles on the fashion industry and its impact worldwide, secondhand clothing, and also ecofashion, which has evolved out of concern for ethical consumption. Such varied topics as beads and perfumes are situated within a global context, and there is an informative section on dress and fashion resources worldwide, including museum collections. A fitting conclusion to this monumental major work on dress, Global Perspectives provides an important cross-cultural overview of human dress and adornment across the globalized world." -- back cover

The Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion - Vol. 9 East Europe, Russia, and the Caucasus

The Berg encyclopedia of world dress and fashion is a new 10 volume reference resource available for use within the Learning Centre.
Volume 9: East Europe, Russia, and the Caucasus
"From the Baltic to the Balkans, and from Siberia to the Caucasus, the lands covered in this volume contain a multitude of cultures with rich and distinctive dress and textile traditions. However, tradition has not been the only factor shaping dress in the region. The contrast between ethnic and urban dress provides a revealing lens through which to consider individual and cultural identities across the region. Attitudes towards dress have also been shaped by socialism and its demise, as the former "Eastern bloc" states have undergone massive upheaval. This landmark volume is the first major reference work to provide a comprehensive overview of dress within this vast and complex region. Broad surveys of individual countries are supplemented with case studies focusing more narrowly on people, practices, and objects to provide both range and depth. The long tradition of exquisite embroidery is highlighted. The volume also has articles on the influence of the Ottoman Empire on this part of Europe, a discussion of Roma dress, and a "Snapshot" on Balkan bandits. A pioneering, major reference work, East Europe, Russia, and the Caucasus also places dress within the political and sociocultural contexts that have shaped people and nations in this region." -- back cover

The Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion - Vol. 8 West Europe

The Berg encyclopedia of world dress and fashion is a new 10 volume reference resource available for use within the Learning Centre.
Volume 8: West Europe
"This volume examines the complex strands that make up the European tradition of dress and fashion. Europe's varied landscapes and climates have influenced ways of dressing, as have continental and regional historical movements. West Europe, while emphasizing the global importance of European dress and fashion since 1800, provides information about the earlier contexts for their development. It also provides an analysis of haute couture as well as concise introductions to ethnic dress traditions and developments in the making and selling of clothing. Mainstream topics such as the changing shape of the female form are analyzed alongside current issues: ethics in the fashion industry, intelligent textiles, and subcultural dress, for example. Articles are illustrated by images ranging from exquisite couture creations to caricatures lampooning the extravagant follies of history's "fashion victims." This volume is the key reference work for everyone wishing to discover more about West Europe's seminal role in both fashion history and the shaping of cultural identities." -- back cover

This volume is the only major work to cover the full range of dress across this region, from the historic Silk Road, which played a vital role in linking dress and textile traditions in the area, to topics rarely before investigated, such as Kurdish dress, the role of the hajj market, and Afghan fashion shows. The region's location as a bridge between East and West is also explored, as are the cultural and symbolic meanings of Islamic dress and the West's romantic fascination with Orientalism. Rare photographs provide fascinating visual evidence of the region's rich and complex history." -- back cover
