Ephemeral but Eternal Words │ Traces of Asia

Ephemeral but Eternal Words │ Traces of Asia
Curated by Fuyubi Nakamura

6 April – 1 May 2010

The official opening
6pm Tuesday, 13 April 2010

To be opened by
Professor Howard Morphy, Director
Research School of Humanities and the Arts
College of Arts and Social Sciences

Exhibiting artists
Chihiro Minato, Tsubasa Kimura, Phaptawan Suwannakudt and Savanhdary Vongpoothorn

The physical and visual presence of writing has a special place in many Asian cultures. This exhibition, Ephemeral but Eternal Words: Traces of Asia, showcases the significance of words and writing through the brush and lens of four artists with connections to Asia: Tsubasa Kimura, Chihiro Minato, Phaptawan Suwannakudt and Savanhdary Vongpoothorn. Working in various media and styles—from calligraphy and painting to photography and mixed media—the ‘writing’ presented in this exhibition are physical traces of time and space, embodying what is ephemeral and what is eternal in our life. We leave traces of ourselves throughout life, be it visible or invisible. Words, whether spoken, written, imagined or visualised, are traces unique to humans. Some words disappear while others remain only in memory or leave physical traces as writing or text. These traces are the theme of this exhibition.

Curated by Fuyubi Nakamura of Research School of Humanities and the Arts at ANU, it is a visual reflection on the themes of the “In the Image of Asia: Moving across and between locations” conference at RSHA (13-15 April 2010), co-convened by Ana Dragojlovic and Fuyubi Nakamura.

Supported by the Research School of Humanities and the Arts, ANU and the ANU School of Art Gallery
The Japan Foundation and the NAVA Janet Holmes à Court Artists’ Grant

Click!

Click! : a short history of cameras is a new DVD that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

This three-part documentary looks at the progress in camera technology, from large and medium formats through to 35 mm, Polaroid and digital cameras. Also featured are examples of still shots from some of the best known photographers from each period - Joseph Breitenbach, Nadar, William Henry Fox Talbot, Jacques Henri Lartigue and Adeline Keil.

The documentary also looks at the trends in the use of photography from its first use for portraits of the wealthy and famous, its use by artists in the study of movement, and on to its increasing democratisation through ease of use and accessibility.

Episode 2:
In this second episode of a three-part documentary, we look at the progress in camera technology with the introduction of the small format, the 24x36, invented in the 1920s but really commercialised in the 1950s. These descriptions are combined with examples of still shots from some of the best known photographers from the 1920s through to today, such as Joseph Breitenbach, Robert Capa, Frank Horvat, Oliviero Toscani and Sabine Weiss.

The documentary exposes a new approach of those photographers as they have been trying to come closer to reality, greatly helped by the lightness of the small 24x36 camera and the use of telephoto and wide-angle lenses that can easily be fitted to it.

Episode 3:
This episode looks at the progress in camera technology with the introduction of Polaroid, disposable and today's digital cameras. We see examples of still shots from some of the best known photographers, such as Joseph Breitenbach, Frank Horvat, Oliviero Toscani, Sarah Moon, Sabine Weiss, Noel Quidu and artist Andy Warhol.

The documentary explores a new practical approach to photography through more popular, simpler devices, with no major technical requirement but the desire to use a camera with one thing only in mind, to get an image immediately, with the guarantee of a predictable result.

All of his friends who were pushing for reforms within the church were subsequently put to death by the Inquisition. Visual Impact

Visual impact: culture and the meaning of images by Terence Wright is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"From the office to domestic interiors to shops, images surround us in modern life. The internet has increased this visual onslaught exponentially. Is there a systematic order to this seemingly endless array of pictures and depictions? Looking at picture-making traditions around the world, the author demonstrates how schemes of depiction are ordered throughout all ages and across all cultures.

Drawing on a wide range of examples - from painting and drawing to film, photography and the Web - Visual Impact analyses the theory and practice of visual representation. Pictures and images provide a cognitive context through which people can explore and understand their world. They frame and shape daily life. By considering the techniques and systems that inform visual displays, the author examines how cultural values and traditions shape particular visual styles.

Drawing on the growing field of visual anthropology, Visual Impact, sets image making in an historical and global context, and uses it as a window for exploring the human condition at a deeper level. Anyone interested in the cultural role of art, film and the internet will find this book an exciting and stimulating read." -- back cover
