The Great Book Swap - 1st September 2010

The Learning Centre along with the Yurauna Centre and CITSA are participating in the Great Book Swap and Indigenous Literacy Day 1st September 2010.
Donate a book, and take another for a gold coin - Swap children's books, text books, fiction, any book that you don’t want that someone else might treasure.
Drop off your donation from now until Wednesday…..

Join the Learning Centre and Yurauna Centre for the Great Book swap and donate a gold coin while enjoying tea & coffee, mini muffins & fruit platters from CITSA
Time: 12-2pm
Location: Reid Learning Centre

Why do you want money donations? Why can’t we just send our old books?
Firstly because these kids, like all kids, deserve at least a handful of their own new books. And also because we are not set up logistically to collect, evaluate, and transport used books. ILP is currently run largely by volunteer work and donated freight and funds, and so our programs are tailored to what we can do well. It’s very important for the books to be chosen by early childhood literacy specialists, and also that they are culturally appropriate for the communities to which they are supplied. Books can be rejected for unexpected or unknown reasons. Some children’s books may be about an Indigenous custom, or display artwork that is alien to other communities, or a book could unwittingly violate cultural ideas of proper behaviour, or even be about a fictitious child who has the same name as a person in the community who has passed away –a name that should not be spoken. All of these complex and important considerations have to be taken into account.

See FAQs http://www.indigenousliteracyproject.org.au/Resources/FAQ.aspx#WhatISILP

However, the Yurauna Centre has offered to pass on any appropriate left over books to a local Indigenous organisation.

-- Chiefly tropical -- Where legends bloom -- Stools for a school --

Caroline Swift "I would spend my weekends at home, just making things, and I felt really happy doing tht. It was so cathartic after a full-on week [as head of knitwear design for Benetton]. I wanted to take the road a bit less travelled and try something new."

-- Learning life's equations -- Lost & found in Italy -- What says Li, will be --

John Hardy "The big thing we've done recently is founded a school, The Green School ... Al Gore ruined my bloody life. I'd done well in the jewellery business and was going to retire and have a happy time chasing white balls around the place."

Hayley Allen "It's important to have things around you that lift your spirits ... Colour and a sense of humour are integral to the products I design. I love that there's a story. I love that I've seen how it impacts on people's lives."

Visual Impact

Visual impact: culture and the meaning of images by Terence Wright is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"From the office to domestic interiors to shops, images surround us in modern life. The internet has increased this visual onslaught exponentially. Is there a systematic order to this seemingly endless array of pictures and depictions? Looking at picture-making traditions around the world, the author demonstrates how schemes of depiction are ordered throughout all ages and across all cultures.

Drawing on a wide range of examples - from painting and drawing to film, photography and the Web - Visual Impact analyses the theory and practice of visual representation. Pictures and images provide a cognitive context through which people can explore and understand their world. They frame and shape daily life. By considering the techniques and systems that inform visual displays, the author examines how cultural values and traditions shape particular visual styles.

Drawing on the growing field of visual anthropology, Visual Impact, sets image making in an historical and global context, and uses it as a window for exploring the human condition at a deeper level. Anyone interested in the cultural role of art, film and the internet will find this book an exciting and stimulating read." -- back cover
