The Design Process

The design process (2nd edition) by Karl Aspelund is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

Karl Aspelund guides students through the exploration of the seven stages of The Design Process.  Beginning at Inspiration, readers travel though Identification, Conceptualization, Exploration/Refinement, Definition/Modeling, and Communication on the way to Production.  The tour is enhanced by the accompanying Perspectives of designers who travel parallel paths in the design of fashion, interiors, industrial and consumer products, and public art projects.  End-of-chapter exercises help students move their own design projects from the World of Imagination to the World of Objects.  Appendices recommend readings for further exploration and serve as refreshers on design elements and principles; notable designers, architects, and artists; trend analysis; and influences on design from the mid-1800s to the first decade of the twenty-first century.

New to this edition:
  • Expanded discussion of sustainability is integrated into the text so that readers will routinely incorporate consideration of this issue into all stages of their design projects.
  • Full-color illustrations engage visual learners with memorable images of the concepts discussed in the text.
  • New and updated Perspective features explain how designers address current needs and constraints.

  • The Analysis: An introduction to DIY
    • Yes we can! The DIY movement has moved on from home improvement to encompass technology, distribution and communication methods that, in theory, allow anyone to make anything and bring it to market.  The effect will be profound for consumers and brands alike, says Anna Sansom
    • The blueprint home As 3D printing becomes more advanced and accessible, in the not-too-distant future we will see consumers taking the ultimate creative control of the products they consume.  The home will become a mini factory, with domestic 3D printers capable of printing anything from clothing to food.  Viewpoint visualises the potential future of the blueprint home.  By Kate Franklin, with photography by Metz+Racine and props by Peter Cole
    • Doing it for themselves From hi-tech hacking to handicrafts, DIY in the 21st century has different meanings for different people.  Liz Hancock identifies today's key DIY groups and explores their implications for business
    • Clicks and mortar The people-less purchase is coming soon to a store near you, as consumers become their own sales assistants.  By Duncan Graham-Rowe
    • Hack it better Hack it better, or even hack it beautiful, is the modern-day make-do-and-mend mantra.  Discarded or broken items and materials are creatively adapted to enhance functional, aesthetic or emotional appeal.  Viewpoint collates and specially commissions pieces from designers ready to revamp refuse.  By Kate Franklin and Caroline Till, with photography by Victoria Ling
  • The Argument: Six trend opinion-formers give their views Small is Beautiful; Closed Wallets, Closed Minds; Tell Us a Story; Eco Equals Ego; Back to the Future; Come Together

    • Patriot gains 'Buy local' has long been a mantra for food shopping, but now consumers are applying buy-national thinking to a far wider range of products.  Josh Sims asks whether brands should be waving the flag for the patriotic purchase
    • It's the real thing We spend so much time immersed in virtual worlds, there is now a backlash towards reconnecting with the physical.  But real and virtual are far from irreconcilable and the real innovation will take place in the ambiguous territory between the two.  By Mark Hooper
    • (R)IP? Received wisdom has it that a brand protects its intellectual property at all costs.  But open-source thinking, the free sharing of concepts, technology and even production methods, might do for the world of things what is successfully achieving in the world of data, explains Daniel Nye Griffiths
    • Testing times Challenger culture is raising the bar for personal achievement ever higher, through extreme sports, hobbies and entrepreneurialism.  As pushing the limits becomes the norm, Kevin Braddock asks whether the era of the amateur is over
    • The new naive Mixing styles and transcending genres with a childlike disregard for the rules, a new school of illustrators and designers is rediscovering the expressive power of naivety.  The handmade is combined with the digitally designed, the real with the unreal.  Viewpoint introduces its pick of the creatives setting the aesthetic agenda for the coming seasons.  By Kate Franklin and Bianca Wendt
  • The Overhaul:

Managing the Design Process

Managing the design process, concept development: an essential manual for the working designer by Terry Lee Stone is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"Managing the Design Process - Concept Development is an essential primer for all graphic designers.  As students, designers learn to develop and hone their creative skills, but courses on managing their careers and business are almost nonexistent.  Everything from creating a design brief to what questions to ask in a client meeting, are the cornerstones of a successful design career.  Learning how to communicate and effectively strategize with clients to envision the best possible outcome for each project is essential for every designer.

This book explains how to do these things and more.  It focuses on the concept development process, the early stages of the designer-client relationship, before the design hits the pavement, so to speak.  Research, goal setting, design strategy, creative risk taking, and effectively managing client expectations are all addressed.

Businesses and organizations of all types are starting to understand that good design can give a product a distinct competitive advantage over other products in the same category - inevitably benefiting their company's bottom line.  What is not clear to many is the intricate collaborative partnership between designer and client that is required to not only achieve a great design, but also to utilize it to its full capacity through a series of strategic steps.  Managing the Design Process - Concept Development is precisely about that collaboration." -- back cover

The Design Manual

The design manual by David Whitbread is a new book that is now available for loan from the Learning Centre.
"The Design Manual is an indispensable and comprehensive reference for traditional and digital publishing. From beginners to professional graphic designers, desktop publishers and graphic design students, The Design Manual provides essential information on conceptual approaches, planning and project development techniques for print, web and multimedia production. The first edition won an Australian Award for Excellence in Educational Publishing."
"Design tasks are divided into sections on publication, corporate identity, on-screen and advertising design. Specific skills such as branding and logo design; stationery, catalogue, annual report and newsletter production; websites; storyboarding and animation techniques are discussed. The production section includes layout and typography for print and screen, colour and colour systems, printing and finishing processes."
"With checklists and practical tips throughout, The Design Manual has become a standard reference for anyone involved in or interested in design." -- back cover
