Ben Keene "We came up with this idea of giving an online community a base somewhere in the world. It's the idea of living in a remote place, an island, combined with the new culture of communication and networking online."

-- Chiefly tropical -- Where legends bloom -- Stools for a school --

Caroline Swift "I would spend my weekends at home, just making things, and I felt really happy doing tht. It was so cathartic after a full-on week [as head of knitwear design for Benetton]. I wanted to take the road a bit less travelled and try something new."

-- Learning life's equations -- Lost & found in Italy -- What says Li, will be --

John Hardy "The big thing we've done recently is founded a school, The Green School ... Al Gore ruined my bloody life. I'd done well in the jewellery business and was going to retire and have a happy time chasing white balls around the place."

-- To go far ... quickly -- Bamboozled -- Larger than life --

Hayley Allen "It's important to have things around you that lift your spirits ... Colour and a sense of humour are integral to the products I design. I love that there's a story. I love that I've seen how it impacts on people's lives."

-- A Single Word -- On bananas & banality -- A little more heart --

Martin Hughes "I don't have a cause; I'm just really excited about coming up with creative solutions to social problems. Although 'The Big Issue' wasn't my idea, its success was partly my responsibility so I feel like I was part of that solution."

-- Entertaining Trouble -- Being Good Sports -- Wall St. --

Visual Acoustics

Visual acoustics: the modernism of Julius Schulman is a new DVD available for loan from the Learning Centre.

"Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world's greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every major modern and progressive architect since 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. His images epitomised the singular beauty of Southern California's modernist movement and brough its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images." -- back cover
